Asphalt Roadway Technician

The Asphalt Roadway Technician (ART) Course is intended to assure competency in proper testing procedures and everyday field tasks. Individuals who complete this course will be certified to perform Asphalt Roadway Technician duties on SCDOT projects. The participants are required to perform mathematical problems that occur while working as a roadway technician. The learning experience is dependent on the level of prior experience and may differ between participants. However, the goal is the same: to establish a consistent understanding of roadway inspection. The instructors for the course are made up of knowledgeable asphalt industry consultants, equipment manufacturers, academia, contractors and SCDOT representatives.

Course Aggregate Level 1 Sampling & Grading Technician

The Coarse Aggregate (CA) Level 1: Sampling and Grading Course is intended to assure competency in issues affecting QC/QA for aggregate suppliers. This course serves as the primary certification required of all aggregate QC technicians and focuses on field sampling, sample reduction, and grading.

Course Aggregate Level 2 Testing Technician

The Coarse Aggregate (CA) Level 2 Testing Technician's Certification Course is intended to assure competency in physical property testing of course aggregate materials.  It is aimed at aggregate suppliers' QC/QA technicians and appropriate SCDOT personnel who are required to perform and regulate necessary aggregate QC/QA tests.  Individuals who complete this course will be certified to perform CA Level 2 Testing Technician duties for aggregate materials produced for use on SCDOT projects.  The instructors for the course are made up of knowledgeable aggregate industry and SCDOT representatives.

Earthwork and Base Course Technician

The Earthwork and Base Course Technician course is intended to assure an understanding of SCDOT requirements for Earthwork and Base Course construction and competency at performing the proper SCDOT testing procedures needed to monitor this construction.  Individuals who complete this course will be certified to perform Earthwork and Base Course Technician duties on SCDOT projects.  The participants are required to perform mathematical problems that occur while working as an earthwork and base course technician.  The instructors for the course are made up of knowledgeable industry consultants, equipment manufacturers, academia, and SCDOT representatives.

Foundations Technician

The Foundations Technician Certification course is intended to prepare the technician to monitor and document drilled shaft and driven pile operations resulting in safe foundation installation per contract documents.  Individuals who complete this course will be certified to perform Foundations Technician duties on SCDOT projects.  The technician will learn the specifications, terminology, equipment and process details pertaining to drilled shaft and driven pile installation.  The course describes the technician's role from the beginning step of the Drilled Shaft and Pile Installation Plan to the final step of shaft and pile acceptance.  The instructors for the course are made up of knowledgeable industry consultants and SCDOT representatives.

HMA Level 1 Quality Control

The Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Level 1 Quality Control (QC) Technician Course is intended to assure an understanding of the requirements for inspection of asphalt materials at the plant, proper testing procedures, and related SCDOT specifications.  Individuals who complete this course will be certified to perform HMA Level 1 QC Technician duties on SCDOT projects.  Each participant is responsible for performing laboratory quality control tests during the course, demonstrating competency of these testing procedures individually, and performing mathematical calculations related to working as a HMA Level 1 QC Technician.  The instructors for the courses are made up of knowledgeable asphalt industry consultants, academia, contractors and SCDOT representatives.

HMA Level 2 Job Mix

The Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Level 2 Job Mix Technician course is intended to cover the concepts and preparation procedures of HMA job mix formula (JMF).  Individuals who complete this course will be certified to perform HMA Level 2 Job Mix Technician duties for SCDOT projects.  Each participant is responsible for performing mathematical calculations related to the JMFs.  The instructors for the course are made up of knowledgeable asphalt industry consultants, academia, contractors and SCDOT representatives.

HMA Level 3 Quality Manager

The HMA Quality Manager Course is intended to assure the ability to troubleshoot and solve problems when monitoring HMA mix design, production, placement, compaction and testing.  Individuals who complete this course will be certified to perform HMA Level 3 Quality Control Manager duties for SCDOT projects.  In addition, any person maintaining a current HMA Level 3 QC Manager Certification (also known as HMA 1-2-3-ART Certification) will not be required to re-certify at the other levels of HMA certification.  The course is held in a classroom setting with no laboratory sessions.  In addition to troubleshooting, participants are expected to perform calculations related to HMA job mix preparation, production, quality control testing, placement, and compaction.  The instructors for the course are made up of experienced asphalt industry personnel, academia, and SCDOT experts.

Pavement Preservation

The Pavement Preservation Level 1: Asphalt Seal Coats Technician Course is intended to assure competency in proper testing procedures and everyday field tasks. Individuals who complete this course will be certified to perform the corresponding duties for that type of technician on SCDOT projects. The participants are required to perform mathematical problems that occur while working as a pavement preservation level 1 technician. The learning experience is dependent on the level of prior experience and may differ between participants. However, the goal is the same: to establish a consistent understanding of inspection of asphalt seal coat applications. The instructors for the course are made up of knowledgeable industry consultants, academia, contractors and SCDOT representatives.

 

The Pavement Preservation Level 1: Micro Surfacing/Slurry Seals Technician Course is intended to assure competency in proper testing procedures and everyday field tasks. Individuals who complete this course will be certified to perform the corresponding duties for that type of technician on SCDOT projects. The participants are required to perform mathematical problems that occur while working as a pavement preservation level 1 technician. The learning experience is dependent on the level of prior experience and may differ between participants. However, the goal is the same: to establish a consistent understanding of inspection of micro surfacing and slurry seal applications. The instructors for the course are made up of knowledgeable industry consultants, academia, contractors and SCDOT representatives.

 

The Pavement Preservation Level 1: Concrete Pavements Technician Course is intended to assure competency in proper testing procedures and everyday field tasks. Individuals who complete this course will be certified to perform the corresponding duties for that type of technician on SCDOT projects. The participants are required to perform mathematical problems that occur while working as a pavement preservation level 1 technician. The learning experience is dependent on the level of prior experience and may differ between participants. However, the goal is the same: to establish a consistent understanding of inspection of concrete pavement preservation applications. The instructors for the course are made up of knowledgeable industry consultants, academia, contractors and SCDOT representatives.
