Upward Bound Details

Upward Bound has the following goals:

  • To provide participating students with maximum exposure to the career and educational opportunities afforded to college graduates.
  • To increase the high school graduation rate of participating students.
  • To increase the college acceptance, retention, and graduation rates of area students.


During the 18-week Academic Component, participating students receive

  • College preparatory classes
    (enrichment instruction in math, English, science, reading, and Spanish)
  • Free Tutorial Services
    (one-on-one and group tutoring in college prep and tech prep)
  • Counseling Services
    (career and personal, counseling, and academic advisement)
  • Study Skills Assistance
    (individual and group instruction in goal setting, time management, note taking, test taking, and other academic survival skills)
  • Workshops
    (computerized SAT and ACT preparation, College Admissions, financial aid, budgeting, computer orientation)
  • College/Cultural Activities
    (campus visits, musical productions, concerts, drama productions)

During the six-week Summer Component, Upward Bound students participate in a variety of academic and personal growth experiences, including:

  • College preparatory classes
    (Prepare them for the upcoming academic year. Enrichment instruction in math, English, science, reading, and Spanish)
  • College Classes
    (Students who are recent high school graduates take up to 6 hours of college coursework and receive credit that may be transferred to the college or university they plan to attend.)
  • Resident Life
    (Students experience living on campus for six weeks at a nearby residential college or university.)
  • Tours
    (Students visit a number of regional colleges and universities. Past tours have included Clemson University, Lander University, University of South Carolina, University of North Carolina, Queens College, University of Georgia, Morehouse College. Students also tour one or more major cities. Past tours have included Charleston, SC; Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; and Washington, DC.)

To participate in the Upward Bound program, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. You must also be committed to postsecondary education, have a need for academic assistance, and meet these criteria:

  • Be between the ages of 13 and 19.
  • Be enrolled in a high school in Anderson, Oconee or Pickens County.
  • Have a family income that meets the federal economic guidelines
  • Be a first-generation college student (neither parent has a four-year college degree).
