Course Description:
The Nurse Aide is the primary direct care giver in long-term care, home health, hospitals, and private duty services.  The demand is great for this healthcare worker due to the aging population.  This course is approved by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) and qualifies you to take the SC Nurse Aide Competency Exam, which is required to work in a variety of healthcare facilities and organizations.  This exam is also nationally-recognized and will permit you to work in most states throughout the USA.  Both day and evening classes are offered in multiple locations (Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens Counties).

• Safety and Body Mechanics
• Admission, Transfer, Discharge
• Personal Care (basic nursing skills)
• Vital Signs
• Nutrition and Fluid Balance
• Basic Structure and Function of Body Systems
• Restorative Care
• End of Life Care

Entry Requirements:
Required Prior to Class:

• 6 Panel Drug Screen - documentation backup
• Proof of current flu vaccination
• TST Skin Test Two-Step procedure - Tuberculosis - documentation backup (if you test positive, you are required to have a chest x-ray)
• Copy of Mumps, Measles, Rubella (MMR) records or a Titer test needs to be administered - documentation backup
• Current criminal background check from Pre Check - information form will be sent upon registration

Also Required for Class:

• Textbooks (see online registration page or call 864-646-1700 for current book list)
• Tri-County Technical College Nurse Aide Student ID - need to obtain after registration
• White uniform, white shoes and white socks are to be worn
  • Scrubs are acceptable
  • No capri pants, cropped pants, shorts or tank tops may be worn
  • Skirts and dresses are acceptable, but keep in mind you will be bending, stooping, and lifting
  • Note: you may want to keep an extra pair of socks in your car during scheduled clinical - feet may get wet during showers and baths
• Shoes must be enclosed
  • White Crocs or white leather tennis shoes are acceptable
  • No canvas shoes or sandals may be worn
• Watch with a sweep second hand

What to Expect:
Traditional Course:

• 52 hours of classroom and laboratory patient care skills
• 40 hours of clinical participation at a long term care facility or retirement community by providing personal care  for residents needing skilled care
  • South Carolina requires 40 hours of clinical experience to qualify to sit for the state certification exam.  
• Assistance in applying for the Pearson Vue South Carolina NNAAP (National Nurse Aide Assessment Program)
  • This certification is required to work in most healthcare facilities
  • Testing administered at Tri-County Technical College
  • After successful completion of testing requirements, your certification is posted on the SC Nurse Aide Registry (www.pearsonvue.com and under "Quick Links", select "Search Nurse Aide Registry")

Online Course:

• Approved by SC Department of Health and Human Services
• Can register and begin any time
• Classroom portion of the course completed from home or any computer with Internet access
• Still need to complete traditional laboratory and clinical portions of the course
  • South Carolina requires 40 hours of clinical experience to qualify to sit for the state certification exam.  
• Assistance in applying for the Pearson Vue South Carolina NNAAP (National Nurse Aide Assessment Program)
  • This certification is required to work in most healthcare facilities
  • Testing administered at Tri-County Technical College
