Former English Teacher Earns Science Prerequisites at Tri-County; Has Been Accepted at Three Medical Schools

For 15 years, David Roper stood in front of the classroom, teaching high school students about English literature, writing and history. Most afternoons were spent mentoring and coaching student athletes. Goodwill Industries’ Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) certification program can be the answer for local industries looking for a pipeline of skilled entry-level technicians. “It’s a business-driven training program,” said Becky Godbey, Goodwill’s vice president of career development services, about the organization’s nine-week training program that consists of a week of work-readiness training and a mix of industry-based basic skills training modules and work experience at local industries. “We are trying to address the economic issues by helping to meet our area’s workforce needs,” she added.

Tri-County Technical College Dedicates Industrial Technology Center

In his 23 years of teaching industrial electronics classes at Tri-County Technical College, Acting Dean of the Engineering and Technology Division Doug Allen says he’s never seen as many requests for technically-skilled employees as he has in recent months. Allen, speaking at a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony for the College’s new Industrial Technology Center, said the modern facility will help meet the growing needs of local industry. The 43,000-square-foot Industrial Technology Center houses the Welding and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) programs and was specifically designed to mimic a real-world industrial setting. It’s also being billed a showplace by economic development prospects and local companies.

College Receives Grant to Train Baby Boomers for New Career

Local displaced workers ages 50 and above will have a chance to gain a new skills set as a Certified Nurse Aide as a result of a $15,000 grant awarded to Tri-County Technical College. Tri-County was the only South Carolina technical college chosen in the latest round of grants for the Plus 50 Encore Completion Program, a national effort to train 10,000 baby boomers for new jobs in healthcare, education and social services. The program is sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

Michelin VP Says Company Is Teaming with Tri-County to Make Manufacturing Jobs More Attractive to Students

When asked what keeps him awake at night, Michelin Executive Vice President Wayne Culbertson says it’s the thought of not having a qualified and skilled manufacturing workforce. Culbertson, who, since 1974, has worked for Michelin in various manufacturing roles, including serving as plant manager of the Spartanburg, Sandy Springs, and Starr facilities, spoke to a crowd of business, industrial, education, government and political leaders at Tri-County Technical College’s Annual Report Luncheon. It’s Michelin’s mission to communicate to young people the rewarding and broad range of career opportunities available to them in manufacturing, said Culbertson, who currently is Personnel and Chief Human Resources Officer.

Student Leaders, President Bury Time Capsule in Celebration of 50th Anniversary

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Tri-County Technical College buried a time capsule filled with items that will give future students and administrators a glimpse of the College and its important events in 2012. The time capsule is a 2' x 2' x 2' hermetically sealed cube containing symbolic items ranging from graduation programs and College publications to presidential election bumper stickers and People magazine. It was buried by President Ronnie Booth and student leaders October 24 during a ceremony outside the Student Center on the Pendleton Campus. The capsule will be unsealed in the year 2062 on the occasion of the College’s 100th anniversary.

Tri-County Technical College will host its second-annual wine tasting fundraiser event Thursday, October 18, at its Anderson Campus. Internship Leads to Full-Time Job for Tri-County Accounting Grad

When Linda DiComo returned to Tri-County Technical College three years ago, at age 47, her goal was to complete the 13 credit hours she needed to earn her associate in arts degree and to secure a job in this struggling economy. She will graduate May 7, at age 50, during the College’s 50th anniversary graduation, with an associate in science degree, in addition to an accounting degree and four accounting certificates. She also has a full-time accounting position waiting for her at Millard & Moore P.A. in Greenville where she did an internship this semester.

Tri-County’s Men’s Golf Team Has a Shot at Winning NJCAA Division I Men’s National Championship

For the first time in its eight-year history, Tri-County Technical College’s Men’s Golf Team has a shot at winning the NJCAA Division I Men’s National Championship. The College’s Men’s Golf team won the Region 10 championship by 16 shots and finished fourth place in the District championship, played at Rockledge Country Club in Rockledge, Florida. This finish qualified the team for the national tournament finals. Nationals are slated for May 14-18 in Newton, Kansas.

It’s 96 days and counting until Lauren McCall graduates from Westside High School and will be heading off to film school this fall to pursue a longtime goal of becoming a cinematographer. She has received acceptance letters from Savannah College of Art and Design and from the University of South Carolina and is waiting to hear from the Los Angeles Film School and School of Visual Arts of New York City. The Tri-County Technical College Women’s Basketball team started its second season November 1 against powerhouse Guilford Technical College from Jamestown, NC. Although the final score was 63-52 with Guilford Tech winning, it was a well-fought battle that was played close until the final minute of the game. Smaller Class Size Just One Reason Why Students Choose Summer Classes at Tri-County

Tanisha Hammond stopped and took a deep breath before she entered the classroom on the first day of her summer-term Public Speaking class at Tri-County Technical College’s Anderson Campus. It was the only class left for the 33-year-old Anderson resident to complete the prerequisites to enter the Associate Degree Nursing program in the fall. “Public speaking is intimidating. I dreaded standing before a large classroom and giving a speech so I had avoided the class by dropping it three times since 2009,” she recalled. She hoped that summer school would offer a smaller class -- and it would be only five weeks of writing and delivering speeches. “When I entered the classroom and saw a small group of students, and I looked at my instructor, who was smiling, I had a good feeling about it. I felt comfortable,” she said.
