PENDLETON --- Academy Award winner Dr. Jerry Tessendorf will discuss his computer software used to create water effects in the movie "Life of Pi" in a February 10 presentation at Tri-County Technical College.

Dr. Tessendorf won an Oscar in 2008 for technical achievement and his software was used in the 2012 film "Life of Pi," which was the 2013 Academy Award winner for best visual effects.   Currently Dr. Tessendorf is director of Clemson University's master of fine arts in digital production arts.

He will deliver his lecture from 1:20 - 2:20 p.m. in the Marshall Parker Auditorium on Tri-County's Pendleton Campus.  The lecture, sponsored by the College 's Enrichment Series Committee, is free and open to the public.

According to Dr. Tessendorf's website, he and three others received the Academy Award in 2008 "for the development of the system of fluid dynamics tools at Rhythm and Hues Studios. This system allows artists to create more realistic animation of liquids and gasses using novel simulation techniques for accuracy and speed."

Prior to coming to Clemson, he worked at the award-winning Rhythm & Hues Studios doing visual effects for various movies. As a principal graphic scientist, he wrote and developed software for visual effects in movies.

Dr. Tessendorf has written software for "Titanic;" "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe;" "Superman Returns;" "The Golden Compass" and the "X-Men" series.
