PENDLETON --- Tri-County Technical College will present its new choir with a choral concert featuring solo and group performances Friday, December 2.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Marshall J. Parker Auditorium on the Pendleton Campus. The public is invited to attend.
Students from men's, women's and mixed choruses will perform a choral arrangement of diverse songs, said Jeff Christmas, Tri-County's new music instructor and choir director. "We hope it's just the beginning of a multitude of performances to come," said Christmas, who was a music instructor for Pellissippi State Community College before coming to Tri-County this semester. Prior to that, he was Office Manager for the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra for two years and on the faculty of the Boston Arts Academy from 2001 - 2003.
"The performances will be an eclectic mix," he said. "They will include spirituals from the American South, contemporary American folk songs, and hundred-year-old songs from the Catholic Church tradition, as well as romantic, classical, and contemporary pieces by soloists."
The choir's musical experience is equally as diverse, he said. "A few of the students never have sung in a choir in their lives and for some, it's been a lifelong experience," he said.
"The diversity of their experiences leads to a richer overall experience in class and in their performances," Christmas said.
