Senator Lindsey Graham Addresses Golden Anniversary Class of 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                      5/8/2012

                                                                                 (By Lisa Garrett)

ANDERSON --- A degree from Tri-County Technical College means something because of the quality of graduates it has produced over the past 50 years, Senator Lindsey Graham told the record-breaking 624 graduates receiving degrees at the College's golden anniversary commencement.

"It's up to you to guard that and continue a tradition of providing valuable service to our community," added Senator Graham.  "You're well prepared to have good opportunities to fill the workforce in the 21st century," he said.

"Tri-County has succeeded for the past half century because each class, teacher, board member and president has built on what the people did before them," he said, recognizing the accomplishments of President Ronnie L. Booth and retired President Don C. Garrison, now deceased.  "We can't be successful without working together."

Although the senator stressed the importance of education in today's world, he urged the grads not to underestimate the value of the love of family and friends.

"You can have a Ph. D. from Harvard but if you don't have love and support, you won't go anywhere," said Graham, himself a first-generation college graduate, who after losing both of his parents during the last two years of college, cared for his 13-year old sister.  "When I started college, my parents were healthy.  My mother died during my junior year and 15 months later my dad died.  I was 22 and my sister was 13.  Our lives were turned upside down.  One of the things I've learned in my time on this planet is that studying and working hard are great in this competitive world.  But don't let your career get ahead of the ones you love.  I'm not a self-made person.  Without my faith, family and friends, I wouldn't be standing here.  When I die, if I can say that I was a good brother, a good friend and faithful to the Lord. I'll know I was successful."

Following Senator Graham's address President Booth awarded faculty member Donna Shannon the Presidential Medallion for Instructional Excellence, the highest award presented to the faculty. Ms. Shannon is department head for allied health/expanded duty dental assisting at the College.  The medallion is presented each year to the instructor who has contributed the most during the academic year to the profession of teaching, to the development of the College and to the students.

President Booth also recognized an outstanding alumnus from each decade (1960s - 2000s).  The following were honored as the Faces of the Decades: Walter Hays McGee, Class of 1967 (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning; Carl Anderson, Class of 1975 (Criminal Justice), Deputy Chief at Anderson County Sheriff's Office; Ethel C. Pettigrew, Class of 1980 (Business Technology with major in Accounting), Certified Public Accountant and Partner at Whitener, Pettigrew & Company, LLC, Clemson; Wanda J. Johnson, 1995 (Criminal Justice) Probation Agent and Victim Services Coordinator South Carolina's Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services (SCDPPS).; and Tracy Whitten Bowie, Class of 2003 (Business Technology with major in Accounting),  Executive Director of Foothills Alliance, Anderson.

In addition, Representative Brian White presented Dr. Booth with a resolution, passed by the General Assembly earlier this year, honoring Tri-County for 50 years of service to the community.

Following the presentations, Dr. Booth and other College officials presented degrees, diplomas and certificates to the graduates.
